The benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages of the Argentine continental shelf were studied from samples of molluscs, echinoderms and bryozoans collected by the RN Shinkai Maru. Two major faunal groups were distinguished: one inhabiting the warmer inner shelf off Buenos Aires and northern Patagonia, and the other occupying the colder middle and outer shelf off Buenos Aires and most of the Patagonian shelf. These results confirm the traditional biogeographic division of the Argentine continental shelf into two provinces: Argentine and Magellanic. Furthermore, the results suggest the possibility of subdividing the Atlantic sector of the Magellanic province into two districts: Patagonian and Malvinean, under the influence of the Patagonian and the Malvinas... |

From a faunal list of 216 of the most common species of prosobranch gastropods at Beaufort, North Carolina, a group of 87 species was selected on the basis of known life cycles and geographic distributions. The larval types were categorized as teleplanic, actaeplanic, or nonplanktonic. The presence of these species in eight approximately equivalent latitudinal zones along the western shore of the Atlantic Ocean was then recorded (Scheltema, 1989). This list has been used, in the present paper, in three different ways: to identify homogeneity or heterogeneity of spatial distribution of the three biological groups; to record the presence of species in geographic sectors defined on the basis of average annual sea surface temperature; and to compare, at the... |

The deep-water benthos (115-2100 m) was sampled in the Atlantic-Mediterranean exchange area (Balgim cruise, N.O. Cryos: lberian-Moroccan Gulf, Strait of Gibraltar, Alboran Sea). The species richness of the bryozoan fauna (146 spp.) showed a marked between-site variability. Peaks of species richness occurred on both sides and in the Strait of Gibraltar under various conditions of temperature and salinity. 'rhe common features of the corresponding sites were the abundance of suitable substrates and the presence of currents facilitating supply of food and propagules. In the Alboran Sea, the species richness decreased with depth more rapidly than in the Atlantic and the depth distribution of several deep-water species showed an upward shift. There is an... |
